The US president, Barack Obama, who over the last year has shown contrary to meet with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, could have concluded that a face to face with the leader of the Kremlin might be beneficial to discuss the situation in eastern Ukraine and Syria.

According to US newspaper The New York Times citing US government sources, Obama, so far opposed a meeting with Putin, would have changed his mind.
The meeting could take place next week, although the negotiators on both sides have yet to agree on a time that fits the agenda of the two leaders.
If implemented, this would be the first face-off between Obama and Putin in almost a year, since the eruption of tensions surrounding the civil war in Syria and Ukraine.

For now, the White House does not comment on the possible meeting. Meanwhile, Dmitri Peskov, spokesman for President Putin also refrains from commenting.
According to the RBC Russian chain, staff organization meeting of the two leaders have addressed in talks between Putin and US Secretary of State, John Kerry, held in May in the Russian city of Sochi. In mid-August, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that does not rule out a meeting between the two presidents, if Washington sends a signal to that effect.
